Bar Stool & Chair Selection for Your Home Billiard Room
When choosing furniture for your home billiard or rec room, careful consideration must be given to each piece selection in terms of quality, usefulness, and aesthetic uniqueness. Selecting the appropriate seating for a billiard room is no exception. No doubt, the best type of seating for any billiard room is bar stools, as they come in many standard sizes and sit taller than normal kitchen chairs. This allows everyone in the billiard room, regardless of whether they are playing or not, to enjoy the game at hand and remain in the action, giving them a clear perspective on what is happening. A few things to consider when selecting bar stools for your billiard room are discussed here.
Sturdiness of billiard bar stools is obviously very important. Before testing the durability of any bar stool, make sure that all screws and bolts are fastened securely and that the bar chair sits flush with the floor (if it does not sit flush with the floor, immediately move on to the next one). No one wants their guests sitting in a bar stool that is rocky or rickety. When seated on a bar stool, one should be able to put his or her feet on the foot rail and all of his weight on the seat (and back rest if it applies) without feeling any rocking or leaning of the seat or legs. Any wobbling or unsteadiness can point to a below average bar stool. Also, having bar chairs with arms is typically one’s own personal preference, and they have their pros and cons. Bar chair arms may add sturdiness and comfort, but may also create an obstacle at times for the user. And if you own a smaller home billiard room, you may want to discount chair arms automatically due to compacted space.
Generally, billiard bar stools come in three different heights, all of which are taller than a common kitchen table chair. The most common height of bar chairs is "bar height" billiard stools, which measure in at 30 inches tall. "Counter height" billiard stools generally range between 22-25 inches tall. “Spectator stools" are the tallest standard bar chairs, and will seat its user 35 inches above the ground. When compared to the height of a standard kitchen chair at about 18 inches, billiard stools are simply better for enjoying all aspects of your home billiard room.
Of course, you will also want to pay attention to style and aesthetic quality of the billiard bar stools, as well. Go with bar chairs that match the decor and theme of your billiard room, therefore adding more ambiance to your existing atmosphere. And make sure to get enough to fill the room, depending on how big the billiard room is and how much free space is available. You do not want overcrowding, so anywhere from two to six bar stools are a good amount. Also, bar stools and chairs are considered “furniture” on the production line and are at any time subject to “go out of style” or “be discontinued,” so make sure you consider an entire set as opposed to just one bar stool. A few examples of setting up bar stools and bar chairs in your billiard room are:
- Two bar chairs with a matching pub table in the corner for alternate conversations
- Four bar chairs scattered randomly around the billiard table to watch the game at hand
- Four bar chairs lined up against a wall in order to wait, spectate, and talk
- Six bar chairs around a bar adjacent to the billiard table
- Four bar chairs at a small bar, with two more stools at a pub table, if space permits
- A bar chair in each corner, which works good in smaller billiard rooms
Unless your billiard room or activity area is humongous, stick with six bar stools or less. Having more than that will not only look tacky and overcrowded, but will take the focus off of the other major pieces of furniture (billiard table, bar, pinball machine, etc.) and put focus solely on the bar chairs, which should be a complementary furniture item to begin with. Just remember to go with a reasonable number of nice, sturdy bar chairs that match your billiard room. From there, all you have to do is pick out your style. Good luck in finding the perfect set of bar chairs for you.
